Apple Car: the project could still be active

Apple Car, according to rumors shared by DigiTimes, the Cupertino giant could be looking for a partnership to create its car

Just a few weeks ago, Mark Gurman , the well-known Bloomberg journalist , broke the news that many would have preferred not to receive: Apple ‘s halt to research in the electric vehicle sector and, consequently, the interruption of the Apple Car project. , the self-driving vehicle that the Cupertino giant has been working on for several years.

A decision that for many came as a bolt from the blue, especially because, in the brightest expectations of consumers, the first vehicles from the famous apple should have arrived on the market no later than 2026 .

Things, however, could change quickly and in the last few hours DigiTimes , a well-known Taiwanese newspaper, has shared some interesting rumors about Project Titan , the code name of the ambitious project dedicated to Apple-branded electric vehicles.

What future for the Apple Car

According to what we read on DigiTimes, the idea of an electric vehicle may not have been abandoned and Apple is considering the possibility of collaborating with Rivian , an American startup that works in the sustainable mobility sector .

The report also refers to a long-term plan, where it is hypothesized that the Cupertino company could return to developing its own vehicle in the coming years (perhaps with the collaboration of Rivian or some other partner) and then have it produced by third parties parts , thus freeing themselves from the task of construction.

Naturally, we are still moving in the hypothetical period and no more information is available even on the possible collaboration with Rivian even if, according to DigiTimes, the startup would be the main candidate for a partnership.

Furthermore, in the same report it is underlined several times that Apple is still studying the matter, perhaps trying to understand if such a project (and the related investments) could really bring benefits to the company.

Project Titan, the history of the project

Rumors about an electric vehicle developed by Apple have been circulating online for several years and, according to rumors on the web, it seems that the technology giant has made substantial investments in this regard, even without achieving a tangible result.

At the beginning of 2024, however, again from Bloomberg, the news arrived that the Cupertino company wanted to put a stop to it , downsizing the project and taking it from a completely self-driving vehicle to a level 2+ , a system which significantly reduces the car’s independence and requires constant intervention from the driver.

Therefore, ideally, the Apple Car would have been able to maintain the center of the lane , move in traffic and on the road more or less autonomously and without the user having to intervene continuously even if, as happens with Teslas , there You need to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.

A few weeks ago, then, the turning point and Gurman’s announcement that Apple would stop research to give precedence to other technologies, such as domestic robotics and artificial intelligence .

At the moment, therefore, the project is still in the balance and it is not clear which of the two rumors may be the most reliable. It is true, however, that the DigiTimes report is rather vague and very confusing , so before you start dreaming (again) of your own Apple Car, it is good to take some time.
